| Lose weight, not your mind with this diet book
Even better, every page of "Dieting Causes Brain Damage: How to Lose Weight Without Losing Your Mind" by Bradley Trevor Greive (Andrews McMeel Publishing, $9.99) features an animal photograph. Who can resist a picture of a slumbering polar bear, flopped next to what must be a pool of water in a zoo, that's captioned "Becoming self-conscious about sunbathing on the beach?" A bird with a piece of fruit in its beak adorns a page that advises, "When in doubt, use your common sense. There is no such thing as a magic weight-loss pill, and if there were such a magic pill, no one would ever sell it to you because then there would be no diet industry." The book ends with Greive's recipe for weight-loss success: Improve your diet. (And laugh at the hippopotamus with its mouth wide open.) Do a little more exercise.
Weight-loss tribulations with a dog
The following was compiled from recently highlights of Mark Robison's pet blog at RGJ.com/blogs/mostlydogs. Five months after knee surgery, our dog Bodie was still walking funny so we had him checked out at our new vet. X-rays revealed that his TPLO surgery has healed perfectly, but that his opposite hip has severe arthritis. That's why he's reluctant to walk. Also, he's overweight. The vet said losing 20 pounds would help the bad hip, perhaps keep his other knee from blowing out and give him more energy. No free-feeding We free-feed our dogs, meaning we have food out all the time and they can eat whenever they want. She said there's no need to get diet dog food, we just need to stop free-feeding them. She said we should feed the dogs twice a day, and when they're done, we need to pick up their bowls off the floor.
It's Time For Your Diet To Die
I want to focus on the subject of "diet" for just a moment. I don't think it's any coincidence that the first three letters of that word are D-I-E! LOL! If you've ever been on one, then you know EXACTLY what I'm talking about. But people who have read about my low-carb weight loss success know that I absolutely ABHOR the use of that word. Not that I don't appreciate that it was the Atkins DIET that I used to lose my weight. It worked VERY well for me and I am now 190 pounds lighter because of it. I don't regret going on that diet one bit. Yet it is not because of the diet itself, but rather the commitment to making this way of eating my permanent choice for life. This is such a foreign concept to so many people who desire weight loss and improved health. All they see is the immediate problem and a diet seems to help them get from Point A to Point B the fastest so they can get back to the normal lives again.
Weight-loss drug to be sold without prescription
The Food and Drug Administration approved on Wednesday the first officially sanctioned weight loss drug to be sold without a prescription. Experts expect the drug, Alli, to be available to consumers in the summer. Although the medication has been available by prescription since 1999, some experts predict that it will be more widely used as an over-the-counter product. It will be the lone government-approved alternative to unproven over-the-counter remedies. People in the United States spend about $1 billion a year on herbal formulas and other supplements that advertise fast weight loss but have no proven effectiveness and can be dangerous. Dr. Curtis Rosebraugh of the FDA called the approval important in light of the array of unproven products on the market. "It's rather significant that there will now be available an over-the-counter product that we do have data on, that we know is efficacious and what the safety profile is," Rosebraugh said.
